How to Assess an Electrician

Move beyond the CV: a practical framework for judging an electrician's real, job-ready competence.

Technical assessor evaluating an electrician's practical skills

A polished CV tells you what a candidate claims; assessment tells you what they can actually do. For technical roles, structured evaluation is the difference between a reliable hire and an expensive mistake.

Separate qualifications from competence

Qualifications show a candidate met a standard at some point. Competence is whether they can do your work now. Look at both, but weight recent, relevant, hands-on experience heavily.

Probe practical experience concretely

Ask candidates to describe specific tasks they have done, not general responsibilities. “Walk me through the last control cabinet you wired” reveals far more than “Are you good with cabinets?”

  • What equipment and systems have they worked on?
  • What faults have they diagnosed, and how?
  • Which diagrams and standards are they comfortable with?
  • What did they do when something went wrong?

Test diagnostic thinking

Fault-finding is where good electricians stand out. Present a realistic scenario and listen to their reasoning. A structured, methodical approach matters more than instantly guessing the answer.

Check safety mindset

Safety is non-negotiable. Ask how they isolate equipment, handle risk and follow procedures. A casual attitude to safety is a serious warning sign regardless of technical skill.

Assess communication and documentation

Electricians work in teams and leave records others rely on. Clear communication and tidy documentation are part of competence, especially in cross-border teams.
